# Configgy > Configgy is a free, open-source macOS menu bar app that backs up and restores the local config you'd hate to lose but don't want in a blanket cloud sync: Zen Browser, Claude Code, and any folder you point it at. Each target is versioned as dated zip snapshots in Dropbox / iCloud Drive / Google Drive / a folder you choose, with history, diff preview before restore, and rollback. Secrets — passwords, cookies, history, SSH private keys, gh tokens — are never copied. - Platform: macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later; primarily used on macOS 26 - Price: Free, open source (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) - Author: rocavence (https://github.com/rocavence) - Download: https://github.com/rocavence/Configgy-app/releases/latest - Homebrew: `brew install --cask rocavence/tap/configgy` (removes the quarantine flag; update with `brew upgrade`) - Source code: https://github.com/rocavence/Configgy-app - Website: https://configgy.rocavence.com (English: https://configgy.rocavence.com/en/) - Current version: 1.0.0 (October 2026); the app is about 7 MB, a 2.2 MB download ## What it does Configgy keeps the settings you'd hate to lose versioned and restorable, in a cloud folder you already have. It runs in the menu bar (about 14 MB of memory); everything else is one window. | Target | What's copied | When | |---|---|---| | Zen Browser | An allowlist: preferences, user.js, themes, shortcuts, workspaces and tabs, containers, search engines, chrome/ CSS, installed extensions. Each zip also self-restores via an embedded restore.sh | Each time you quit Zen, if anything changed | | Claude Code | An allowlist from ~/.claude: settings.json, CLAUDE.md, agents/, commands/, skills/, hooks/, output-styles/, plugin lists, each project's memory/; plus ~/.agents/skills | When you click Back Up | | Folders | Files and folders you pick, or suggested ones (shell, Git, SSH config, Zed, VS Code, terminals, Karabiner…) | When you click Back Up | Backups go in `…/Configgy/` inside Dropbox, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or any folder you choose. Each zip is named after the Mac it came from; Configgy keeps 10 per target per Mac (adjustable) and never deletes another Mac's backups. ## Secrets policy Never backed up, for every target: .credentials.json, files named *token*, *credential* or *secret*, .env files, SSH/TLS keys, .netrc/.npmrc/.pypirc, browser cookies, saved passwords, form history, certificates, session and history dumps, .git, node_modules and virtual environments. Existing backups are scanned; ones that still hold such files can be cleaned (keeping the rest) or deleted. Restores never write them back. ## Safety - Every zip is built and tested locally, then moved into the cloud folder under a temporary name, so a half-written backup never appears. - A missing or unwritable backup folder is reported, never silently replaced with a local one. - Restores show every file that will change first, save the current versions as a "before restore" copy (checked before anything is written), and only write inside the target's own paths. Paths are stored relative to the home folder. - Zen is never closed without asking. Every backup and restore is logged to ~/Library/Logs/Configgy/configgy.log. ## The window One sentence at the top says whether your settings are backed up and what to do if not, with a single button. Below it, each target is a line in plain words: when it was last backed up, how many backups you can restore, and from how many Macs. Restore lists backups by day, labelled with the Mac they came from, and previews the changes. Settings has General, Backup, Exclusions and About; a first-run guide picks the backup folder and what to protect. Six languages: 繁體中文, English, 日本語, 한국어, Español, Português. ## Install notes - Download the .zip from https://github.com/rocavence/Configgy-app/releases, unzip it, and drag Configgy to Applications; or `brew install --cask rocavence/tap/configgy`. - Never backed up: logins, passwords, cookies, keys, tokens, .env files, browsing history and sessions; every target copies an explicit allowlist. - Self-signed (not Apple-notarized). On first launch, open via right-click → Open, or run `xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Configgy.app`. - Full Disk Access is required so it can read protected config folders and write to your cloud backup folder. macOS never prompts for this automatically, so the app guides you on first launch. - Pick a backup location: Dropbox by default; otherwise Dropbox / iCloud Drive / Google Drive / a custom folder. ## Build from source Requires Xcode Command Line Tools (`swift`, `codesign`); no full Xcode needed. ```sh sh Scripts/build-app.sh # → build/Configgy.app cp -R build/Configgy.app /Applications/ ``` The build signs with a stable self-signed identity (`Configgy` / `Findly Self-Signed`) so Full Disk Access survives rebuilds. ## CLI The same binary runs headless: ``` Configgy backup [--force] | list | status | preview Configgy restore [ [ws ]] | workspaces Configgy claude-backup | claude-list | claude-restore [] | claude-preview Configgy discover | targets | locations | target-add Configgy target-backup | target-list | target-restore [] | target-preview [] ``` ## Tech stack Native Swift (AppKit), no dependencies. Menubar agent (NSStatusItem) plus a single management window; the same binary doubles as a CLI. Backups are zip archives written to a user-chosen cloud folder. ## History Configgy started as Zennly, a one-trick menubar app that zipped the Zen Browser profile to Dropbox on quit. Claude Code config joined as a second target, then the idea generalized into the target model above. It was built almost entirely through conversation with Claude Code (Opus), with the UI tuned from screenshots. ## Links - Website: https://configgy.rocavence.com - Source: https://github.com/rocavence/Configgy-app - Releases: https://github.com/rocavence/Configgy-app/releases/latest - README (English): https://github.com/rocavence/Configgy-app/blob/main/README.md - README (繁體中文): https://github.com/rocavence/Configgy-app/blob/main/README.zh-Hant.md - Author: https://github.com/rocavence - License: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0
